As part of the ADAPT CLIMA CENCYL Project, funded by the Interreg POCTEP programme, the CENCYL Cities Network held, on 18/06/2025, a MEETING ON THE RENATURALISATION OF BUILDINGS AND URBAN ENVIRONMENTS at the Torre de los Anaya in Salamanca.

The main objective of this meeting was to advance the creation of a network of climate shelters in the face of heatwaves, especially in vulnerable urban areas, as well as to promote the renaturalisation of schools and other public spaces as a key measure for adapting to climate change.

Throughout the day, renaturalisation projects being implemented in Salamanca were analysed, highlighting the municipality’s commitment to a greener, healthier, and more resilient city. Other innovative initiatives currently underway in the Iberian Peninsula were also presented, allowing for a valuable exchange of knowledge, experiences, and strategies between territories facing similar challenges.

The meeting programme was structured into two main blocks:

  1. Renaturalisation initiatives in Salamanca, with a particular focus on creating greener and safer school environments in the face of extreme events, such as heatwaves.

  2. Key experiences across the Iberian Peninsula, including actions promoted by Fundación Biodiversidad in Spain and the Metro Public Net Lisbon project developed by the Lisbon Metropolitan Area—both leading examples of nature-based solutions applied to urban settings.

This meeting reaffirmed the importance of acting at the local level by integrating natural solutions into urban planning to enhance the quality of life and the resilience of our cities to climate change.
