The CEL RURAL project won the Roger Léron Prize for Best Innovation in Energy Transition, awarded by FEDARENE (the European Federation of Agencies and Regions for Energy and the Environment) during the organisation’s 35th anniversary celebration on Thursday, 15 May.

The live vote in Brussels selected CEL RURAL from among three finalists. FEDARENE recognised the project for its innovative approach, strong local and regional impact, and scalability, establishing it as a benchmark for rural energy communities across Europe.

During the ceremony, the team presented a project poster and delivered a speech highlighting CEL RURAL’s goals and achievements. The project and its partners are now actively sharing photos and event materials across their communication channels as part of a broader outreach effort.

Together, we can make the energy transition a reality in our regions

At the same time, the project team hosted a dissemination event and coordination meeting, where they announced the launch of the fifth and final pilot Rural Energy Community in Moeche, Galicia, marking a significant step forward in the project’s implementation.

As Lead Beneficiary, ITG thanked the programme and all partners involved. The team reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing the energy transition and promoting sustainability in rural areas.

CEL RURAL continues to apply for further awards and plans to take part in the upcoming Interreg Cooperation Day. The team is exploring options to organise local actions focused on the project’s pilot communities.

“Together, we can make the energy transition a reality in our regions,” the team concluded, viewing this recognition as a powerful motivation to keep innovating for a more sustainable future.
