Imagine a ship’s deck crane being able to alert of a failure before it happens. Its real behaviour is instantly replicated in a digital model capable of simulating manoeuvres, detecting anomalies, or training crew members without touching the sea. That is a digital twin, and in the naval industry, it is no longer science fiction.

With the aim of bringing this technology closer to companies and professionals in the sector, the Centre for Innovation and Services in Technology and Design (CIS) will hold the event “Advanced technologies in an intelligent digital twin: success stories” on 2 July in Ourense, organised within the framework of the TWIN NAVAUX cross-border cooperation project.

The event will showcase real-world applications, with the participation of Galician and Portuguese companies such as CT Engineering Group, GHENOVA, Surcontrol, Siemens, AtlanTTic, among others — all of which are already using digital twins to optimise processes, cut costs, and enhance safety in complex industrial environments.

Renowned hacker and cybersecurity expert

Since a digital twin is a software system that connects with the physical equipment it replicates — typically through the Internet of Things (IoT) — cybersecurity becomes an essential technology in its design and operation. For this reason, the event will feature Chema Alonso, renowned hacker and cybersecurity expert, who will highlight the critical importance of protecting the integrity and security of these digital systems in the naval sector.

The event will also feature contributions from academic and technological institutions such as ACLUNAGA, the University of A Coruña, CATIM, and the Portucalense University, all members of the TWIN NAVAUX consortium. The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A Spain–Portugal (POCTEP 2021–2027) programme, with ERDF funds, and has a budget of over €1.3 million.

Attendees will gain detailed insight into how this technology is revolutionising predictive maintenance, technical training, and operational efficiency in the naval sector. The programme includes technical talks, practical demonstrations, and a space for dialogue on the future of cross-border smart industry.
